Tampa, Fla. (August 29, 2008) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (1-0) opened their season in impressive fashion as the swept the University of Central Oklahoma (0-1) 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23) in the first game of the University of Tampa Labor Day Classic on Friday morning.
The Lions struggled early in the first game as the Broncos kept even with SLU through the first few points, but Saint Leo managed to get rolling and posted quick victories in games one and two.
With both teams getting used to the new 25-point games, the Lions allowed the visitors from Oklahoma to stay within reach during the Game 3, with the Broncos getting within two-points on multiple occasions. Although it was close at the end with the score 24-23 in favor of the Green and Gold, the Lions proved to be too tough as Saint Leo forced Central Oklahoma into an errant attack to close out the victory.
Blocking became the biggest asset for the Lions in the opener as SLU held almost a 12-0 advantage over the visitors as they dominated the net. Senior Emily Frey (Sr., Mason, OH) posted four solo blocks and assisted on two more, while sophomores Kaitlin McKenna (So., Dearborn, Mich.) and Leah Perry (So., Salem, OH) posted solo blocks as well.
On the offensive side of things, Saint Leo was led by junior Jenna Jordan (Jr., Plant City, Fla.) who notched 14 kills and a .393 attack percentage and McKenna, who went 10-of-15 for the match with a .533 percentage.
Saint Leo will only have a few hours rest as they will face #21 Ashland University in a 3:00 p.m. match at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.
