Saint Leo, Fla. (November 15, 2007) – Saint Leo University volleyball player Kaitlin McKenna (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) was named the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, it was announced on Thursday. McKenna was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection and a member of the 2007 SSC All-Freshman Team. Saint Leo sophomore setter Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, Puerto Rico) was a First Team All-Conference selection.
McKenna established a new program record for highest single-season hitting percentage as she hit at a .451 clip and was second on the team with 369 kills and 129 blocks. The middle blocker’s .451 hitting percentage was second in the nation and second in the SSC behind Tampa’s Erin Clark, who was named the 2007 SSC Player of the Year on Thursday. McKenna also ranks seventh in the SSC with an average of 0.96 blocks per game.
Nogueras, the 2006 AVCA South Region Freshman of the Year and a member of the 2006 SSC All-Freshman Team, earned a spot on the SSC First Team for the first time in her career after a record-breaking season in 2007. The sophomore established a new program record for assists with 1,528 and a new record for assists/game with 11.40. Nogueras added career-highs with 229 kills, a team-high 374 digs and 71 blocks.
In addition to McKenna and Clark, Nova Southeastern University head coach Steve Wilcosky was named the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year. Voting for the all-conference volleyball team was conducted among the league’s head volleyball coaches and sports information directors.
The Saint Leo University volleyball team (24-13, 6-10 SSC) was selected to participate in the 2007 NCAA Volleyball Championships and will face No. 14 Florida Southern College this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the University of Tampa’s Bob Martinez Sports Center. The Saint Leo-Florida Southern match will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.
