Lakeland, Fla. (October 17, 2007) – Thirteenth-ranked Florida Southern held off a late surge by Saint Leo in game four to capture a four-game Sunshine State Conference win, 30-20, 30-17, 26-30, 31-29, Wednesday night at Jenkins Field House.
The loss ended the Lions’ (20-8, 4-5 SSC) five-match winning streak, while the win was FSC's fourth straight and boosted the Moccasins' record to 17-6, 6-3 in the SSC.
After Florida Southern had won the first two games, the Lions claimed game three, pulling away from a 25-25 tie. In game four, the Moccasins broke a 7-7 tie with a 7-0 run and led 24-14 before the Lions started their rally. The Lions pulled even at 28-28 and 29-29 before FSC's Danielle Durham delivered a kill and the Lions had a hitting error to end the contest.
Ashley Martin and Danielle Higginbotham each had 12 kills and Durham added 10 to lead the Moccasins. Chelsea Armer was the only Lion in double figures in kills with 12.
The Moccasins had 12 service aces in the match, four by Martin and three by Elise Burke, who also delivered 42 assists and had a team-high 12 digs. Amanda Cook (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had 14 digs for Saint Leo and Michelle Nogueras (So., Cayey, Puerto Rico) added 13.
Saint Leo will host Florida Tech in a Sunshine State Conference match on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
