St. Petersburg, Fla. (August 24, 2007) - The Saint Leo University volleyball team (1-0) opened its season on Friday morning at the Eckerd Invitational in St. Petersburg. The Lions defeated the Lewis University Flyers (0-1) by a score of 3-1 in the McArthur Center. The Lions fell behind the Flyers but stormed back to take the final three games of the match (27-30, 35-33, 30-20, 30-24).

The Lions were led by Chelsea Armer (So., San Jose, Calif.) who registered 15 kills and freshman Leah Perry (Salem, Ohio) who added 14 kills. Michelle Nogueras (So., Cayey, Puerto Rico) led the Lions with three aces and Eni Lukacs (Bradenton, Fla.) led the team with 18 digs in the match.

A late surge by the Flyers and freshman Ashlee Lindish secured the victory for Lewis University in game one, as they scored the final four points of the game.

The second game was a back and forth battle that saw both Lewis and Saint Leo exchange points until the Lions charged ahead to take a thrilling game 35-33. The Lions took control in the third game, as they took a 2-1 lead in the match. After trailing early in the fourth game, the Lions scored the final 15 points to seal the match and earn an opening day win.

The Lions are back in action tomorrow at the Eckerd Invitational as they will be taking on Davis and Elkins at 11:00 a.m. followed by Francis Marion at 5:00 p.m.
