Lakeland, Fla. (November 4, 2006) - The Saint Leo University volleyball team (21-10, 8-8- SSC) was swept by the eighth-ranked Florida Southern College Moccasins (30-4, 15-1 SSC) on Saturday night in the regular season finale for both teams. With the win Southern grabbed a share of the Sunshine State Conference title with Tampa, as the Mocs won by game scores of 30-28, 30-21, 30-22.
Both teams will now await the announcement of the field for the 2006 NCAA Division II National Championships. The regional selections are set to be announced Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. at NCAASports.com. Eight teams from the South Region will be selected, and Saint Leo was tied for fourth in the latest poll (Nov. 1).
Saint Leo's historic season included setting a new program record for wins in a single season, and a pair of tournament victories (Valdosta State & Bentley).
Sophomore middle blocker Emily Frey (Mason, Ohio) led the Lions on Saturday, as she totaled 10 kills and hit .455. However the FSC trio of Beverly Stasis, Leinani Bernabe and Danielle Durham all had double-digit kills to help the home team celebrate a Co-Conference Championship.
