Melbourne, Fla. (November 2, 2006) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (21-9, 8-7 SSC) set a new program record for wins in a single season, as the Lions swept the Florida Tech Panthers (2-29, 0-15 SSC) in an SSC match on Thursday night.  Saint Leo swept the season series between the two with game scores of 30-21, 30-26, 30-18.

The Lions surpassed the previous single-season mark of 20 wins set in 1986 and equaled in 1999.  Saint Leo has one match remaining in the regular season at Florida Southern on Saturday night (7:00 p.m.).  The team will then learn its post-season fate with the NCAA Tournament selections on Sunday night at 10:00 p.m.

SLU was led Thursday by senior outside hitter Erin Oberlin (Naples, Fla.) who registered 12 kills.  Middle blockers Emily Frey (So., Mason, Ohio) and Sara VerVoort (So., Little Chute, Wis.) also added eight and seven kills, respectively.  Frey hit .462 while VerVoort was also red hot with a hitting percentage of .429.

Saint Leo looked comfortable from the outset, although the Panthers tied the score once in the opening game, and closed to within three points late in game two.  Game three was close early, but the Lions eventually pulled away to record their historic victory.

The Lions are currently tied for fourth in the NCAA South Region according to the latest NCAA Division II Regional poll released on November 1.  Saint Leo is tied with Barry University and Eckerd College with the one match now remaining in the season.  Eight teams from the region will be selected Sunday night to play in the 2006 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament.
