Saint Leo, Fla. (September 29, 2006) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (13-4, 4-2 SSC) defeated Rollins College (11-5, 3-2 SSC) in four games in a Sunshine State Conference match Friday night. Saint Leo won the match by the scores of 31-29, 28-30, 31-29 and 30-23 for its eighth win in nine matches.
Saint Leo was steered by freshman setter Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, P.R.) who had a match-high 3 solo blocks and 7 blocks overall to go with 50 assists. Sophomore Sara VerVoort (Little Chute, Wis.) added 5 kills and a perfect hitting percentage. For Rollins, junior right side Lorena Orlandini led the way with 14 kills and a .379 hitting percentage.
Saint Leo hit .252 as a team for the match, while Rollins hit .207. The turning point of the match came in the third game after Rollins clawed back from a 28-21 deficit to tie the score at 28, Saint Leo regrouped to win 3 of the next 4 points to clinch the third game 31-29.
Saint Leo will next play on October 4 in a conference match on October 4 against the University of Tampa (7:00 p.m.).
