LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – Saint Leo freshman Kacie Kelly was named a Schutt Sports / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Freshman of the Year finalist when the NFCA released their finalists Wednesday, May 17.

Kelly, the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, was a mainstay at second base for the Lions where she played all 52 games on her way to earning NFCA and D2 Conference Commissioner's Association First Team All-South Region honors. Kelly, a true freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., was one of eight finalists for the 2017 Freshman of the Year.

Kelly, a First Team All-SSC honoree, ended the season as the SSC leader in batting average (.440), on-base percentage (.498), runs (42), hits (80), and at-bats (182), while she was ranked inside the top 10 in slugging percentage (.533), runs batted in (35), doubles (15), and fewest strikeouts (7).

There is one finalist from each of the eight regions and the winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 24 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Banquet in Salem, Va.

The award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among freshmen softball student-athletes throughout Division II. Dixie State's Janessa Basset was the inaugural recipient and Colorado Christian's Charlotte Romero earned the honor in 2016.
