2nd-seeded softball falls to 7th-seed North Ala. in extra innings

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo, the second seed in the south region, fell to the seventh-seed North Alabama 10-4 in eight innings to open up play in the NCAA Division II South Regional 2 at University Softball Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The Lions (37-14) started things off hot as they scored three runs over the first two innings to hold a 3-0 lead going to the third. Senior hurler, Stephanie Adkins was dealing as she let just one baserunner on in the first three innings, which was a single up the middle in the third inning. Adkins pitched 5.2 innings and allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out four batters and walking three.

North Alabama got on the board in the fourth inning with two runs before putting up another run in the fifth. Saint Leo answered the lone run in the fifth to keep a 4-3 lead before the Lions of North Alabama scored in the top of the sixth to tie the game at fours.

Alison Mitts suffered the loss after pitching two innings and allowing six runs on six hits. Three of the six runs that came against Mitts were unearned as the Lions struggled down the stretch with fielding errors.

In the extra inning, Saint Leo collapsed allowing six runs on five hits with three errors. Stephanie Adkins returned to the mound after Sara Neuman made an appearance in the circle to relief Mitts. Adkins came in and retired the final batter with a groundout to third.

Saint Leo, trailing 10-4 in the bottom of the eighth, saw Kacie Kelly hit a two-out double down the left field line before Rachael Heath singled through the right side pushing Kelly to third with two outs. A final foul pop up saw the North Alabama take the game and advance in the winner's bracket of the NCAA South Regional 2.

From the plate, Rachael Heath tallied three hits in her five at-bats where Michelle George went 2-for-4 and Kacie Kelly 2-for-5. Ciera Schumaker, Danielle Bottley, Michelle George and Sommer Pollard were all credited with a run scored as Kelly, Heath and Bailey McKenna all drove in one apiece.

In game two of the regional, Lee won its first-ever NCAA postseason game over Alabama-Huntsville, 7-4, and will advance to play North Alabama Friday at 12 p.m. before the Lions and Chargers face off at 3:00 p.m. in an elimination game.
