#11 Softball bounces back to win series at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – No. 11 Saint Leo softball bounced back Saturday to take the final two games of the three-game Sunshine State Conference series against Lynn to win the series two games to one. The Lions won game one Saturday at the Lynn Softball Field 4-1 before a come from behind 7-4 victory in game two.

All three Lions' pitchers saw action once again on Saturday as Alison Mitts and Stephanie Adkins picked up wins. Mitts pitched the first game and earned the win as Adkins came in for relief and earned the save, her second of the season. Sara Neuman started game two and exited after 1.1 innings of work. Adkins came in to relief Neuman and pitched the final 5.2 innings of work to earn her 13th win of the year.

Saint Leo (25-6, 6-3 SSC) swept the doubleheader Saturday after Danielle Bottley and Rachael Heath both hit a .714 batting average from the plate. Bottley and Heath both went 5-for-7 on the day as Bottley went 3-for-3 in game one and Heath went 4-for-4 in game two. 

GAME ONE – #11 Saint Leo 4, Lynn 1
Saint Leo bounced back after their loss Friday night to take game two of the series and first of Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Fighting Knights. Alison Mitts picked up her sixth win of the year after throwing 6.1 innings of work. Mitts finished with seven hits, one run, four walks and three strikeouts before turning things over to Stephanie Adkins who pitched 0.2 innings. Adkins held the Lynn batters to no hits after striking out one of the two batters she faced to earn her second save of the season.

The Lions jumped on the Fighting Knights early as they scored three runs in the first inning. Kacie Kelly started the first game of the day off with a walk. Rachael Heath stepped in with a runner on first and laid down a bunt. Heath and Kelly would advance bases on a wild pitch before coming in to score on a Brittany Creamer single through the left side. Creamer would come around for the third run of the inning on a Danielle Bottley single.

Lynn would get one run back in the bottom of the second as Shayle Arenson hit a one-out single before coming to score on a Francais Olexa double to left center.

Mitts would work four clean innings allowing the Fighting Knights not to score before Adkins came into relief her in the seventh inning with two on and one out. Adkins would retire the final two batters with a pop-up and a strikeout swinging.

Danielle Bottley would lead the team at the plate after going 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Kacie Kelly, Rachael Heath, Brittany Creamer and Bailey McKenna would all tally one hit in the game.

GAME TWO - #11 Saint Leo 7, Lynn 4
Saint Leo swept the day with a 7-4 game two victory to win the series. Sara Neuman got the start for the Lions but Stephanie Adkins came in for relief in the second inning before winning her 13th game of the year. Neyman

Lynn got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Saint Leo answered the two runs with two of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2. Rachael Heath would single to start the inning before coming around to score on an Amanda James single up the middle. James would come in to score the second run on a Danielle Bottley single down the left field line, to tie the game.  

The Fighting Knights regained the lead with their third run in the bottom of the second.

The Lions used a four-spot in the top of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Ciera Schumaker started the inning with a double to right field before Samantha Ohmie reached on an error leaving runners on first and second with no outs. Olivia Prieto, who would pinch run for Ohmie, stole second and advanced to third on a Heath bunt single; Schumaker scored on the play. A passed ball would allow Prieto to score as Heath moved to third and scored on a Michelle George double to right center. An error by the pitcher would allow George to advance to third and score the fourth run of the inning before the final out was recorded.

Lynn answered back with one run in the bottom half of the sixth to make it a two-run game before the Lions pushed it back to a three-run game, 7-4, on a single by Michelle George scoring Rachael Heath from second. Heath started the inning with her fourth hit of the game with a one-out single to right field before swiping second and scoring on George's single.

Adkins preserved the win with a double-play and a groundout in the bottom of the seventh to sit down the Fighting Knights 1-2-3 to end the game.

Rachael Heath led the Lions in game two, going 4-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored and one RBI. Michelle George and Danielle Bottley followed Heath, both going 2-for-4 from the plate. Bottley had one RBI where George had two RBI and one run scored with one double.

Ciera Schumaker and Amanda James teamed up for the final two Lions' hits in the game.  

Saint Leo continues to play on the road as they will travel to Lakeland to take on the Florida Southern Moccasins for a three-game SSC series March 24 and 25. The first game on Friday will start at 7 p.m.
