Softball moves up to #16 in first NFCA Poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Behind a 8-3 start to the season, the Saint Leo softball team moved up one spot to No. 16 in the nation in the first poll released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

The Lions, previously No. 17 in the NFCA preseason poll, opened the season with a sweep of Flagler before turning in a 3-1 performance at the Eckerd tournament to move to 5-1 on the year. Saint Leo wrapped up play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Feb. 12 after posting a 3-2 record at the tournament to move to 8-3 on the year.

Humboldt State overtook first place in the poll after a 5-0 start to their season where West Texas A&M moved to second with an 11-0 start to the 2017 campaign, moving up from fourth. North Alabama, 2016 defending national champions, fell from the top spot to No. 3 in the country after going 8-2 with losses to Embry-Riddle (Feb. 3, 3-1) and the University of Mobile (Feb. 4, 5-1).

Saint Leo will start play at the Florida Tech Tournament in Melbourne on Friday, Feb. 17 at 12:30 p.m. against East Stroudsburg before a 5:30 p.m. meeting with Florida Tech that night. The Lions will face No. 4 Armstrong State (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday before Stonehill (9 a.m.) and No. 4 Armstrong State (1:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
