Softball enters season as preseason #17 in NFCA Poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo Softball enters the 2017 campaign as No. 17 in the nation as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The Lions, who finished 2016 as No. 16, will start their campaign in the top-20 after having advanced to the NCAA South Regional 1 after winning the second Sunshine State Conference title in program history with a 21-3 SSC record. Saint Leo posted a 39-8 overall record behind the direction of Head Coach Erin Kinberger.

The Lions' season came to an end in 2016 when they lost to eventual national champion North Alabama 1-0 in the regional tournament. North Alabama enters the 2017 season as the No. 1 team in the nation followed by Humboldt State at No. 2. Armstrong State (No. 3), West Texas A&M (No. 4) and Southern Arkansas (No. 5) round out the top-5 of the preseason poll.

Saint Leo, who was just picked to repeat as the Sunshine State Conference Champion, represents the SSC as the long team in the top-25 poll.

The Lions open the 2017 slate with a doubleheader at Flagler on Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Following the opening games at Flagler, the Lions will travel to Clearwater, Fla., to take part in the Eckerd Tournament at the Eddie Moore Complex where they will face Chadron State, Florida Southern, and host Eckerd.

Saint Leo will host Embry-Riddle on Friday, Feb. 24 for their home opener at University Softball Field.
