Lions Sweep Weekend Tournament Winning all Four, Scoring 39 Runs!

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team (10-7) took the win against the Merrimack (0-3) during game one Saturday morning from the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Showdown tournament at Lake Catherine Stadium.   The doubleheader featured a hard fought game in which Saint Leo defeated Merrimack 4-3; the Lions ended the day with a mercy rule victory over Flagler 8-0 in six innings.

The Saint Leo Lions were coming off a slugging fest of 25 hits the day before, and looking to continue that against Merrimack.  The Lions picked-up five hits and just enough runs for the victory in the close battle.  The second game of seven hits and six stolen bases were enough for the mercy rule victory over Flagler.  In addition, Saint Leo' pitching staff only allowed eight hits on the day.

The Lions continued to rack up the stolen bases collecting three, leading the way was McKenzie Burns, Sarah Steiner, and Cassie Boggs.  The bats were still warm from yesterday's slugging fest.  In the bottom of the second Victoria Obermeier (1-2) singled to left scoring Brittany Ewing (1-3) who had doubled earlier in the inning.  In the bottom of the third the Lions took advantage of errors that contributed to the second scoring opportunity for the Lions when Brittany Ewing flied out to Right Field, and a throwing error advanced Cassie Boggs (0-2) to second, and then advanced to third by the Short Stop's throwing error.   Sarah Steiner (0-3) advance and scored on the play.  Cassie Boggs stole home and by way of Chelsey Steedley (0-1).  In the bottom on the fifth, the third scoring opportunity was started by Angela Kafalas (2-3) who has continued her hot hitting with a single to left field and going 2-3 with an RBI, Sara Steiner was able to cross the plate for the second time which gave the Lions the lead 4-3 and Merrimack was not able to rebound.

In the circle for the Green and Gold was senior Sarah Steiner (5-4) secured her fifth victory this season.  She went five innings allowing five hits, with three runs and striking out three.  Alana Tabel (sv,3) came in relief and tossed two innings allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out one.  Picking up her third save on the season.

In the second and final game, the Lions faced off against Flagler.  Coming in with three straight wins and scoring 31 runs, they were looking to stay red hot.  They did not let us down!  Seven hits and eight runs later in only 6 innings of play the Lions mercy ruled the Saints of Flagler.

Adriana Sanders (1-2) started things off for the Lions in the bottom of the first with a hard hit single up the middle of the diamond.  She later scored stealing home giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the third the Lions again got hot and woke up the bats.  Singles from Rachael Heath (1-1), McKenzie Burns (1-4), and Cassie Boggs (2-3).  Angela Kafalas (1-3) tripled up the left field line for three RBI's scoring Chesley Steedley (0-2), Brittany Ewing (1-2) and Cassie Boggs. The third was a big inning scoring five runs and building a huge 6-0 lead.  To finish things off was in the bottom of the sixth scoring two more runs off of no hits.

The Lions were stealing bases all day and this game was no different.  Cassie Boggs register three and McKenzie Burns, Adriana Sanders, and Rachael Heath also earned stolen bases.  Totaling six against the Saints and for the day a total of nine.

Ashley Ehlers (3-0) was in the circle for the Green and Gold, and pitched a 6.0 inning complete game three hit shut out! She was able to strike out three and only faced 21 hitters and only leaving three runners on base.  She improved her record to 3-0 on the season.
