Lions Earn Split in Day One of Armstrong Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Saint Leo softball team ran its mark to 5-6 after a day two split of the 2014 Armstrong Atlantic Tournament, Saturday afternoon from Armstrong Softball Fields.  The Lions won game one from Mars Hill, 8-7, before being upended 7-2 by number 5 ranked Armstrong in the nightcap.

In game one, Mars Hill took an early 2-0 lead on the Lions before the Lions scratched their way back into the contest. McKenzie Burns lead off the first inning with a single and stolen base (6) and would score off a Cassie Boggs base hit.  The Lions would score another two runs in the second inning taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch, scoring both Rachael Heath and Michelle George.
Mars Hill battled back to tie the game at three in the third, but the Lions would answer back and plate another run in the sixth by Rachael Heath single scoring Tiffany Thompson who had pinch run for Torrie Weindorf to tie the game at 4-4.
The game would then go to extra inning and thanks to the international Tie-breaker rule a runner is place at second base at the start of the inning.  In the eighth Mars Hill was able to score.  The Lions had a couple more hits in them and were able to score with Jessica LoBianco single scoring Brittany Ewing.
Mars Hill keeping the pressure on the Lions crossed the plate in the top of the ninth scoring two runs putting the Lions down 7-5.  The Lions were not going to be defeated, Michelle George base hit set-up the two-run, and two out base hit by Brittany Ewing. Ewing blasted the game-winning RBI's single up the middle scoring both Michelle George and Chelsey Steedley for the Win!
Ashley Ehlers preformed in impressive fashion as she tossed 9.0 complete innings, allowing 10 hits with four walks and striking out seven. The righty improved her record to 2-0.
Game two saw a tough 7-2 loss to the No.5-ranked Armstrong Atlantic (5-3). The Lions were only able to generate five hits, it was Rachael Heath with her first triple on the season that had the second RBI alone with Brittany Ewing getting the other.   Unfortunately, the Pirates strung together eight hits and seven runs (three home runs accounted for four of the seven runs) during the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 7-2 lead.
Starter Alana Tabel lasted only (2.0) and Sarah Steiner came in as relief and in the circle for the Green and Gold as she went 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and four earned and was saddled with the loss.  Jaclyn Amato came in as relief for 2.0 innings.
In total, the Lions left 19 runners on base, but collected 11 base-on-balls and hit .231 as a team.
The Lions will wrap-up the Armstrong Atlantic on Sunday, February 15, when they face-off again to No. 5-ranked Armstrong Atlantic at 10:30 a.m.
