SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (3-3) dropped a pair in doubleheader action at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational, Sunday afternoon from the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Lions fell in the early contest, 5-3, to Flagler, before losing a close one to West Florida, 3-1.
McKenzie Burns led the Lions with four hits, a Stolen Base, a RBI, and a run scored, while Adriana Sanders finished with a hit and a Stolen Base. McKenzie Burns, Adriana Sanders, Cassie Boggs, and Angela Kafalas each had RBI's on the day.
Flagler started the first game with two runs in the top of the first and the Lions were able to bounce back when McKenzie Burns crossed the plate when Cassie Boggs hit into a fielder's choice getting the RBI. The Lions were kept off the scoreboard until the fifth and sixth when an RBI single by Sanders scored Torrie Weindorf and Angela Kafalas collected a RBI by scoring Tiffany Thompson off the fielder's choice. Unfortunately, three runs by Flagler, including a two-run home run by Bessent in the second gave Flagler enough runs for the victory.
Sarah Steiner took the loss for the Lions.
Game two looked promising at the start as the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Burns drew a bases loaded walk to score Chelsey Steedley. The lead was short lived as West Florida registered three runs over the third and fourth inning off six hits. The Lions were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the game to finish 3-1.
Alana Tabel took the loss for the Lions as she fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Lions will return to action tomorrow, Feb 8th, when they face Armstrong in the last game of the Eckerd College Spring Invitational. The game will begin at 12:30 p.m.
