CLEARWATER, Fla. – The opening games of the Eckerd College Spring Invitational was a wet one for the Saint Leo softball team, but the rain could not put out the fire at the plate for the Green and Gold. The Lions picked up two wins on the evening, defeating Lee 14-0, and closing out the wet Friday evening with a 9-5 victory over Shorter. The two wins move Saint Leo to 3-3 on the season.
Squaring off against Lee University (1-0), senior Sarah Steiner was able to keep a fine grip on the ball, pitching a score-less game. Steiner, only facing 15 of the visiting Flames, was able to keep them to zero runs on just two hits, recording six strike-outs, and only walking one on the day. The Lions offense was behind Steiner from the start of the first inning, bringing 20 hitters to the plate. Chelsey Steedley, Torrie Weindorf, and Steiner all earned singles. Junior Cassie Boggs Doubled and Senior Brittany Ewing Tripled which they all scored. There were five walks, six hits, five errors, and the Lions' scored 12 runs when the inning was finished. The Lions' were able to cross the plate again in the 3rd after a couple of more walks and a Double to center by Senior Torrie Obermeier which scored both Sophomore Danielle Ferrara and Sarah Steiner.
Junior Ashley Ehlers came in to close out the great performance by Steiner in the top of the 5th and faced only three batters striking out two and throwing one out herself at first base. The Lions' were able to stop the Flames in just 5 inning, winning 14-0! Next up would be Shorter University Hawks.
The rain stopped for the second game but still remained wet and cold. The Lions' were now facing off with Shorter University Hawks (2-2). The Lions' found themselves down quickly 4-0 in the bottom of the second after the Hawks were able to get four runs off 4 hits. The Lions' did not wait long, they were able to string a couple of hits together by Freshmen Rachael Heath, Junior McKenzie Burns, Junior Adriana Sanders, and Sarah Steiner scoring Heath and Sanders. Now 4-2 the Hawks were not able to score in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the 4th, the Lions exploded, started by Chelsey Steedley and Junior Angela Kafalas with singles. Sophomore Jessica LoBianco pitch-ran for Kafalas. Torrie Weindorf singled and Steedley scored on a throwing error. Later McKenzie Burns put a SAC bunt down and scored LoBianco. Adriana Sanders ripped a Triple to left clearing the bases. Again, Steiner singled scoring Sanders and Cassie Boggs hit a towering two run Home Run to Center Field. The Lions' were able increase their record to 3-3. Next up tomorrow will be at 1:30 on Field 4 against Flagler College and later at 4:00 p.m. against the University of West Florida on Field 3.
