Louisville, KY - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association officially announced the 2013 NFCA Division II All-Region teams. This year's squads are comprised of over 200 players from across eight NFCA regions with first and second teams selected for each region.
Taking top honors was Saint Leo's junior-transfer and pitcher-utility player, Sarah Steiner. A native of Stanford, Fla., Steiner was the only member of Saint Leo's team to be named to the NFCA All-South Region First Team. In 18 appearances, Steiner accumulated a 1.66 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched. In addition, Steiner led the Lions in batting average (.389), on-base percentage (.483), slugging percentage (.493), hits (54), and was tied for first with 26 walks. Less than a week ago, Steiner was also named to the All-Sunshine State First Team for her abilities as a designated player in the batting order.
Also taking home high honors was the Lions' speedy outfielder, McKenzie Burns, who was selected to the NFCA All-South Region Second Team. Burns, who was also a member of the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team, played in 53 of Saint Leo's 56 games and led the team in at-bats (164) and runs (50). Offensively, Burns ranked highest in all NCAA Division II in stolen bases for the 2013 season, and during the regular season, she broke Saint Leo's all-time single season steals record.
NFCA member coaches in each of the eight regions selected this year's All-Region teams and all honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three NFCA Division II All-American squads to be announced next week.
