Lions Win Two on Second Day of Eckerd Invitational

Lions Win Two on Second Day of Eckerd Invitational
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (6-4) improved their record at the Eckerd Invitational by going 2-0, Saturday evening from Eddie C. Moore Complex. The first win of the day came when the Lions defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (2-4) by a score of 1-0. During the second game, Saint Leo earned a solid 12-3 win over second-year program Colorado Christian University (0-4), after five innings of play.
The deciding factor in both contests was Saint Leo's rock-solid pitching, as the Lions pitching staff allowed only three runs and a combined eleven hits on the day.
Senior Megan Still improved her record to 3-1 in the win over the Sailfish, allowing only three hits and striking out five. Sophomore Ashley Ehlers also took the mound for the Lions in relief of Still, tossing less than one inning and striking out one during the outing.
The lone run of the first game came during the bottom of the third inning, when the Lions were able to capitalize on fundamental offense. Sophomore McKenzie Burns led off the inning with an infield single, then stole second base to get into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Jessica LoBianco allowed Burns to take third base, and the sacrifice flyout from junior Chelsey Steedley that followed allowed Burns to score the deciding run.
The second game featured a more lively Saint Leo offense, as the Lions tallied 12 runs in just 5 innings. Freshman Alana Tabel got the win for the Lions, striking out five and allowing only one walk. Junior Sarah Steiner also saw time on the mound when she pitched the bottom of the fifth inning to finish the game. Steiner allowed three hits and two earned runs in the outing.
The Lions launched their attack on the Cougars early in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs before Colorado Christian could make an out. The remainder of the game followed suit, and the hits kept falling for Saint Leo as their offense blossomed, allowing the Lions to tally 13 hits, seven RBIs and three walks, while only striking out twice.
The Saint Leo softball team will return to action tomorrow for the last game of the Eckerd Invitational when they take on Flagler College at 11:30 a.m. from Eddie C. Moore Complex.
