WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference preseason poll has the Saint Leo University women's softball team in the seventh spot this year, it was announced Tuesday afternoon from the conference office. The Lions tallied a total of 25 points.
After losing six instrumental seniors last year, the Lions' 2013 roster is comprised of ten returners and 16 newcomers, as well as a new assistant coach, former 2012 National Champion and University of Alabama standout catcher, Kendall Dawson.
In an extremely close preseason poll conducted by the SSC's head softball coaches, the University of Tampa was selected as the favorite to win the SSC softball title for the second consecutive year. The Spartans received 59 points in the poll, as well as 5 first place votes.
Rollins was picked to finish second (57 points), while Barry occupied the third spot (54 points). Both teams received two first-place votes. Florida Southern was tabbed to finish fourth (44 points), Nova Southeastern took the fifth slot (34 points), and finishing just ahead of the Lions was Florida Tech in sixth place (28 points). Eckerd (15) and Lynn (8) rounded out the poll, finishing in 8th place and 9th place, respectively.
