Lions Drop SSC Series Opener to NSU, 9-1
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (17-23, 2-8 SSC) dropped its Sunshine State Conference series-opener to Nova Southeastern University (23-18, 6-7 SSC), 9-1, Friday evening from University Softball Stadium.
A six-run third inning keyed the Sharks victory as they collected 13 hits for the game.
The Lions, who posted four hits, were led by McKenzie Burns as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rachelle Gremo secured the team's only extra-base hit as she went 1-for-2, while Angela Kafalas added the Lions fourth hit with a single in the fifth inning.
After posting back-to-back scoreless inning to start the contest, NSU used six hits to plate six runs in the third inning. The lead proved to be enough as the Sharks tacked on three more runs across the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 9-0.
Still, the Lions did not go down without a fight as they dented the scoreboard with a run in the fifth inning. Burns recorded the RBI as her groundout allowed Emily Holman to score from third base. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Lions dropped the five-inning contest.
Megan Still was tagged with the loss as she fell to 7-14 on the season. Meanwhile, Sara DeMuth powered the Sharks in the circle as she struck out six batters en route to her 17th win.
Softball will conclude its three-game series with the Sharks on Saturday, March 31. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
