Lions Drops Pair at Diamond Nine Classic
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (11-9) dropped the final two games of the 2012 Diamond Nine Classic, Sunday afternoon from the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Game one featured the second-ranked North Georgia College Saints coming from behind to steal a 2-1 victory, while the third-ranked Texas A&M Buffs shutout the Lions to wrap up the classic.
In total, the Lions secured a 3-3 mark for the Classic, posting wins over two ranked teams.
A trio of Lions recorded multiple-hit afternoons as Rachelle Gremo, Ali Lamb, and Ashlee Sismilich secured two hits. In addition, Lamb drove in the Lions' lone run. In the circle, Saint Leo pitching allowed just five runs across 14 innings of work.
Game one saw another back and forth contest with the nation's second ranked team. The Lions broke the scoreless affair in the third inning when Lamb sent a two-out, opposite field single into right field to plate Alex Garris.
Unfortunately for the Lions' brass, a pesky Saints' bunch tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run. Later in the inning, an RBI double gave North Georgia the lead for good as they went up 2-1. Saint Leo managed to put the tying run on base in the fifth and sixth innings but left the runners stranded each time.
Game two saw the Buffs post one run in each of the first three innings. That was all Buffs' hurler Marci Womack needed as she struck out nine batters en route to her seventh win of the season. The Lions best chance at scoring came in the top of the fifth when runners were stranded at first and second with.
Kristen Kelly (4-3) was tagged with the loss, while Still registered 3.0 innings of three-hit relief.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, February 28, when they play host to Mount Olive in a non-region doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. from University Softball Stadium.
