Softball Earns Split on Day Two of Spring Invitational

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team ran its mark to 8-5 after a day two split of the 2012 Saint Leo Spring Invitational, Saturday afternoon from University Softball Stadium. The Lions fell in game one to No.6-ranked Valdosta State, 7-4, before overturning St. Mary's (TX), 8-6, in the nightcap.

Saint Leo held a 1-0 advantage over the sixth-ranked Blazers before five runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings gave the win to VSU. Meanwhile, Saint Leo overcame a 3-0 deficit in game two to post their third win in four games.

Six Lions collected multiple hits, including Brittany Yates and Rachelle Gremo who led the squad with four and three hits, respectively. Yates' also proved to be the team leader in RBI and runs scored with three apiece.

Game one saw a tough 7-4 loss to the No.6-ranked Valdosta State Blazers. Still, it was the Lions who broke through first as Danielle Moreda plated Yates with an infield single. Unfortunately, the Blazers strung together seven hits and five runs during the fifth and sixth innings to claim a 5-1 lead.

The advantage was trimmed in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Garris and Yates posted back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 5-3. Valdosta State tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh, negating the Lions two-out seventh inning rally which saw them plate only one run.

Starter Kristen Kelly was steady in the circle for the Green and Gold as she went 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned. Megan Still (1-2) was saddled with the loss.

In game two, St. Mary's took an early 3-0 lead on the Lions before the Lions scratched their way back into the contest. In the fourth inning Saint Leo took advantage of two Rattlers' errors and strung together five hits as the Lions to take a two run advantage. Four RBI singles highlighted the Lions second largest run scoring inning of the season.

St. Mary's battled back to tie the game at five in the sixth, but three runs by Saint Leo solidified the two-run win. Yates blasted the go-ahead RBI double and Gremo brought in the eventual game-winning run with a triple down the right field line. Lamb's sacrifice fly punctuated the Lions two-run win.

Still rebounded in impressive fashion as she tossed 4.0 innings in relief of Ashley Ehlers. The righty improved her record to 2-2, while Kristen Kelly earned her first save of the season.

In total, the Lions left 21 runners on base, but collected 11 base-on-balls and hit .321 as a team.

The Lions will wrap-up the Spring Invitational on Sunday, February 19, when they host No. 21-ranked Armstrong Atlantic at 5 p.m.
