Lions' Catcher Career Season Leads to Postseason Award

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo softball catcher Brittany Yates was named Daktronics All-South Region Second Team, it was announced Tuesday by the Daktronics selection committee.

In total five Sunshine State Conference schools were represented on the list, including Rollins, Barry, Tampa, and Lynn. Tampa's Deanna Henriott was named Pitcher of the Year and Arkansas-Monticello's Kayla Jackson was selected Player of the Year.

Yates, a first time recipient of the award, had a career year in the Green & Gold as she started in all 53 games she participated in.

Leading the team with a .380 batting average, the Riverview, Fla. native collected 63 hits, including a team and career best 14 doubles. Yates also posted five home runs and three triples.

Her 34 RBI effort tied her for first on the team while topping the club in runs scored with 32 and slugging percentage at .590. Yates also drew 10 walks and struck a minuscule 12 times in 166 at-bats.

The catcher registered a career-best .977 fielding percentage, committing only five errors and racking up 174 putouts.

Yates' season now puts her three home runs shy of tying the all-time Saint Leo record of 33 set by Ashley Urbanik in 2008.

Voting for the 2011 Daktronics NCAA Division II South Region Softball Team was powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM and voted on by the regional members of D2-SIDA.
