SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team welcomes the Florida Tech Panthers into University for their final home contests of the 2010 season. The Lions, who will be recognizing two seniors on Sunday, will also be bidding farewell to University Field as a new softball complex is expected to be ready for the 2011 regular season opener. The Lions and Panthers are set to do battle beginning on Saturday, April 24 with first pitch for set for 4:00 p.m. A doubleheader will follow on Sunday, April 25 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Series…
Dating back to the 2006 season, the Lions are 2-7 against the Panthers with SLU winning the final contest of the 2009 season in Melbourne by the score of 1-0.  The Lions last claimed a series victory over Tech back in the 2005 season, taking 2of-3 games in Melbourne. Katie Heintz recorded both wins, while the offense outscored the Panthers 7-3 over the three-game span.

About Saint Leo…
The squad has six games remaining on their 2010 regular season schedule, including an SSC clash with No. 10 Rollins in Winter Park, Fla. next week. Offensively, the Lions enter the series with the Panthers batting .258 as a team. Of SLU’s 322 hits, 114 have gone for extra-bases, including 70 doubles. But despite the power numbers, SLU is still being outscored 217-to-175. Leading the offensive charge for the Lions is Tiffinee Harvey and her .358 batting average. She has collected 31 extra-base hits, including 19 doubles and nine home runs. She has driven in 28 runs and scored a team-best 35. Elysha Agen Is second on the club with a .352 average. She has pounded-out 16 doubles and knocked-in 12 from the leadoff spot. Brittany Yates continues to hover around the .280 mark, belting a team-leading 11 home runs and driving in a season-best 35 runs. Defensively, the Lions are 36th in the country in double play’s turned with 17 and their .959 fielding percentage ranks them 84th.

In the circle, SLU is led by Ashton Whidden. She has amassed a 13-13 overall record and leads the team with a 2.53 ERA. The Parrish, Fla. native has collected 78 strikeouts in 171.1 innings of work. Jaime Walker is also doing her part, tallying a 5-9 record and a 3.75 ERA. In 99.0 innings, the Surrey, British Columbia native has allowed just 12 walks. The 12 walks ranks her 12th in the nation in fewest walks allowed per seven innings.

Chasing History…
After a solid week at the plate, Harvey stands just two doubles shy of tying the Saint Leo doubles record of 21. Agen also made a push up the charts and now is just five shy with six games to play. Ana Castillo still sits atop both the conference and county in sacrifice hits with 30 and now stands three shy of tying the all-time DII mark of 33.

Senior Day...
Sunday marks senior day at University Field. The softball program and the Saint Leo Department of Athletics will be recognizing both, Tiffany Munz and Tiffinee Harvey for their contributions to the softball program.

About Florida Tech…
The Panthers come into the game with a 21-24 overall mark and 8-13 in the Sunshine State Conference. A three-game sweep by the No. 10-ranked Rollins Tars in their last series have made Florida Tech losers of four of their last five games. The squad comes into the three-game affair with a .225 team batting average. They are led by Danielle Healy and a .264 average. She is followed by Sarah Oram  and Brianna Barth, who have combined for 13 extra-base hits, including three triples.

Despite their offense only scoring 116 runs, the Panthers have done a solid job from the circle allowing opponents to cross the plate 116 times. They have a team ERA of 1.29 and opponents are hitting just .225. The trio of pitchers have combined to strike out 244 batters and allowed just 54 extra-base hits in over 314 innings of work. Anchoring the group of throwers is Tiffani Bishop. She has collected a 9-10 overall mark and leads the squad with 1.01 ERA and allowed just 39 walks on the season. Brianna Barth has continued to put up stellar numbers as a junior, compiling a 12-12 mark with a 1.28 ERA. She also leads the club in strikeouts with 139. Brianna Witt has made two appearances on the season. Going 0-2, Witt has allowed 14 hits and 10 runs in 10.0 innings of work.
