SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (4-8) is looking to recover from a 1-5 showing at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational. On tap for this week, the Lions will play host for the first time in nearly two weeks as Lewis University and Dominican College enter University Field.

Up Next…
On Friday, the Lions welcome the Flyers from Lewis University in for a non-conference, doubleheader showdown. That primetime match-up will be followed with a Sunday collision with perennial northeast power Dominican College. The Friday match-up is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch, while Sunday will begin at 4 p.m.

A Look Back…
It looking back, the squad played valiantly in six tough games last weekend in Clearwater. Unfortunately, the team only grabbed one win in those six opportunities. On Friday, SLU opened play with an 8-4 loss to the Drury, which was followed by an extra-innings loss to regional opponent West Florida. Saturday didn’t give the Lions any breaks either, as they dropped their first contest of the day to No. 7 Valdosta State 8-2, before being upended by Peach Belt opponent Flagler, 6-3. After an 8-2 defeat to No. 15 Nova Southeastern on Sunday, the Lions rebounded by defeating host school Eckerd College 5-4, in 11 innings.

Offensive Leaders…
For the year, the Lions have one player hitting above .300 and that player is Tiffinee Harvey. Harvey leads in nearly every offensive category for SLU, ranking first in batting average at .457, as well as hits with 16, runs with seven. She also leads with six doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, 30 total bases, and currently owns an .857 slugging percentage. Brittany Yates is second on the team in batting collecting nine hits for a .231 average. She has driven in six runs and connected on a pair of doubles. Elysha Agen is also above the Mendoza line with a .225 average. The Palm Harbor, Fla. native has delivered nine hits, two of which are doubles and leads the team with four stolen bases. Sarah Boyd is second on the team with seven RBI and is a perfect 3-for-3 in the stolen base department. As a team, the Lions are batting .191 with 17 extra-base hits, including 12 doubles.

On the Mound…
Ashton Whidden leads the Green & Gold in the circle posting a 4-2 record. She has compiled a 1.92 ERA and struck out a team-best 19 batters. In 41.1 innings pitched, the Parrish, Fla. native has allowed just nine earned runs. Kristen Kelly is still looking to get on track, as she currently owns an 0-4 record. She has a 5.28 ERA and allowed 17 earned runs in 29.0 innings thrown. Jaime Walker comes into the weekend with a 0-2 record and a 6.32 ERA. She has struck out five batters and allowed just two base-on-balls. As a staff, the Lions have produced a 3.87 ERA, combining for 38 strikeouts in 86.0 innings pitched.

SSC/National Leaders…
Harvey has not just made an impact in the Lions’ lineup, but is making herself known as one of the conference’s top hitters. Harvey ranks at the top of the conference in batting average (.457), as well as doubles (6), and total bases (30). She is second in runs scored with nine and home runs with two. As for pitching, Whidden’s 1.92 ERA ranks her fifth in the conference.

Trends…
The win against Eckerd snapped a five-game losing streak for the Lions. Also, last weekend marked the first time all year Saint Leo lost back-to-back games. The Lions are struggling at the plate in the early going having struck out 86 times. The team has had its series of miscues in the field too, having committed 15 errors. The squad enters the weekend with a .962 fielding percentage. Innings one through four has been the Lions most difficult innings in 2010. Of the opponents 52 runs on the year, 35 runs have been scored in the first four frames, including 10 first inning runs.

About Lewis…
Lewis is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and is located in Romeoville, Ill. As a team, the Flyers lost both their all-time home run leader in Kelly Dianis (28 home runs) and all-time strikeout leader in Courtney Lyons (559 strikeouts). In addition, the team lost four additional players all of which were to graduation. Despite the losses, Lewis is relying on the arm of junior Diana Pickrum who is amassed a 20-3 lifetime record. Leading the returners is senior shortstop Kara Harmatys and first baseman Stephanie Harmon. Harmatys batted .275 with 19 RBI, while Harmon cranked eight home runs and knocked in 32 runs. The team also welcomes seven freshmen into the fold in 2010.

About Dominican…
Dominican, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, hails from New Haven, Conn. The squad has yet to play in 2010 but if 2009 is any indication, the Chargers are set to have another outstanding campaign. Dominican fished atop of the conference in 09’ with an overall mark of 39-16. Their 22-2 mark in the CACC was two games better than Caldwell, as they clinched a regular season conference championship. In 2009, the team hit .331 with 44 home runs and 325 runs scored. Sarah Beck led all hitters with a .407 average and Nicole Scarillo crushed 13 home runs. The team had eight players bat over .300 and stole 52 bags on the year. Katrina Pistilli was their best hurler last season, collecting a 1.79 ERA and a 20-8 record. The team combined for a 2.78 ERA and opponents batted .271 against the Chargers’ staff.
