SAINT LEO, Fla. – After being named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week earlier this week, Lions’ slugger Tatiana Casis was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week, it was announced Wednesday. Casis joins former Lions’ pitcher Katie Heintz as the only two SLU softball players to earn the distinct national award.
Casis had quite the week for the Green and Gold, as she led the team in almost every single offensive category. She compiled a team-high .636 batting average and a .636 on-base percentage. She collected 14 hits, seven of which were for extra-bases. She smashed four home runs, three doubles and slugged a team best 1.318. She drove in a team and conference high 18 runs, while crossing the plate nine times herself. She totaled 29 total bases and capped the week off by going 2-for-2 in the stolen base department.
Earlier in the week in a doubleheader against Salem International, Casis went a combined 7-for-7 with three home runs and 13 RBI. After going 4-for-4 in the opening game, Casis led the Saint Leo offense as the team scored 19 first-inning runs. In that first inning, Casis homered all three times she came to bat, including grand slams in each of her last two at-bats in the inning, tying an NCAA record set in 1995. That first inning alone, she totaled 10 RBI, also setting an NCAA and Saint Leo all-time record.
As the week progressed, Casis had two hits, including a double and an RBI, against then-No. 4 Francis Marion. In Saint Leo’s win over No. 18 Lenoir-Rhyne, Casis collected another RBI and a pair of singles, then finished the week by delivering the eventual game-winning three-run home run against a very talented Newberry squad. She added a double, two runs scored and three RBI to her week’s totals.
Casis and the rest of the Lions’ squad now turn their focus to Sunshine State Conference action as they head to Boca Raton, Fla. for a three-game series with the Lynn University Fighting Knights. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 13 with the first pitch coming at 3:00 pm and a doubleheader following on Saturday, March 14 with a 10:00 am start time. All games will be broadcasted live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
