Miami Shores, Fla. (May 10, 2008) – The No. 19 Saint Leo University softball team (37-15) was eliminated from the 2008 NCAA South Region Softball Tournament with a season-ending 2-0 loss to No. 24 University of Tampa (35-12) on Saturday afternoon in Miami Shores, Fla.
Despite the fact that third seed Saint Leo outhit fourth seed Tampa 5-3, the Spartans were able to score a pair of runs on a solo homer in the second and a sacrifice fly in the third.
Cassie Barnes put the Spartans up on the board quickly in the second inning with a two out home run over the left field wall. In the third Ashley Carrea added the insurance run after leading off the inning with a double. She later scored the second run of the contest on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Arcuri.
Deanna Henriott (24-8) hurled her second victory of the day with a five-hit shutout win. She struck out five and limited Saint Leo to five base hits.
Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) was charged with the loss for the Lions. She gave up three hits, two earned runs and registered eight strikeouts. Urbanik finished the season with a 27-10 record, and went the distance in each of the Lions’ four South Region Tournament contests.
Tampa had stayed alive in the South Region Tournament with a 1-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville earlier on Saturday. The Spartans will face top seeded Barry University for the South Region Championship and a bid to the NCAA Division II Championship Festival in Houston, Texas.
