Miami Shores, Fla. (May 9, 2008) – The No. 19 Saint Leo University softball team (37-14) dropped its first game of the 2008 NCAA South Region Softball Tournament with a 1-0 loss to top seeded Barry University (43-6) on Friday night in Miami Shores, Fla. The loss puts the Lions into the loser's bracket where they will face the winner of the number two seeded University of Alabama-Huntsville and number four seeded University of Tampa Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) went the distance giving up five hits and one run for the Lions, dropping to 27-9 on the season. Along with her defense, she was able to stop many Buccaneer threats, leaving 10 Buccaneers on base throughout the game. Urbanik went 1-for-3 at the plate roping a single in the fourth inning.

Two other Lions managed hits on the evening, as April Slate (Sr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) and Amanda Patrick (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) each added singles.

The Lions and Buccaneers matched zeroes the entire game up until the top of the seventh inning when an RBI double scored the only run of the game.  The Lions didn’t answer the run in the bottom of the inning, as they were handed their first loss of the tournament.

The best opportunity for Saint Leo to score came in the fourth inning when Patrick and Urbanik hit a pair of singles putting runners at first and third. With two outs, the Lions were not able to convert the baserunners into runs.  Saint Leo left a total of three runners on base and committed two errors in defeat.
