Saint Leo, Fla. (May 4, 2008) – The Saint Leo University softball team (35-13) has received a berth in the 2008 NCAA Division II South Region Softball Championships, it was announced Sunday by the NCAA. Saint Leo was selected for the third time in the last four years and the fifth time in the last nine seasons overall.
The Lions will be the number three seed in the South Region and will face number six seed Valdosta State in the first round on Wednesday. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. Barry University will host the South Region Tournament as the top seed in the region with games played Wednesday through Sunday in Miami Shores, Fla.
The South Region Tournament will be a double-elimination tourney with the champion moving on to the NCAA Division II Softball Finals in Houston, Texas on May 14-17.
The Lions finished second in the Sunshine State Conference in 2008, posting a 14-7 record in the SSC. Saint Leo closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak and won seven of its last eight games overall.
SLU and Valdosta State met four times in 2008 with the Lions sweeping both doubleheaders at home and in Valdosta. In the most recent doubleheader, Saint Leo won game one 5-2 and wrapped up a sweep with a 9-8 win in nine innings in the nightcap.
