Winter Park, Fla. (April 23, 2008) – The Saint Leo University softball team (32-13, 11-7 SSC) swept a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at No. 15 Rollins College (33-14, 10-8 SSC) on Wednesday night.  The Lions won both games of the twin bill by 2-0 scores to win the three-game series.

Tatiana Casis (Jr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) went a combined 3-for-7 with two RBI, a home run and a run scored in the double dip.  Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) was a combined 2-for-6 with two RBI, a home run and a run scored.  Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) hurled a two-hit shutout in the opener to improve to 23-8, and then threw the final 1.2 innings of the nightcap to earn her first save of the season.

After the teams combined for just one hit in the first three innings of game one, Saint Leo finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.  Maddox connected on a solo home run to centerfield for what proved to be the game-winning run.  Maddox was also responsible for driving in the Lions’ second run of game one, as she grounded out with the bases loaded to provide an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Two runs was all Saint Leo starter Urbanik needed in game one, as she faced just four batters over the minimum in the contest.

In the rubber game, Casis provided the only runs of the game when she connected on a two-run homer in the top of the third inning.  It was Casis’ team-leading 13th home run of the season, stretching the single-season program record in the process.

Kiki VonHolt (Sr., New Port Richey, Fla.) was the winning pitcher in game two, as she allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings of work.  She also struck out five batters to improve to 8-5 on the year.

Urbanik entered the game in the sixth inning when Rollins has runners at the corners with just one out.  The junior pitcher was able to force a pair of ground outs to work out of the inning.  Urbanik then preserved the win in the seventh, despite a one out walk.

The Lions will wrap up the 2008 regular season this weekend with a home Sunshine State Conference series versus Nova Southeastern.  The teams will meet Friday at 7:00 p.m. with a season-ending doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
