Saint Leo, Fla. (March 30, 2008) – The Saint Leo softball team (25-7, 8-1 SSC) defeated the Florida Southern College Moccasins (21-8, 2-7 SSC) by the score of 6-0 Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Monique Dominguez (Sr., LaPuente, Calif.) hit her fourth home run of the season going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) picked up the win for the Lions, as she threw a complete game shutout, scattering seven hits and striking out four. Urbanik (18-4), also helped herself out at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. April Slate (Sr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) finished the afternoon going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Tatiana Casis (Jr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Elysha Agen (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) picked up hit number 39 on the season going 1-for-3.
The Lions struck first with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Dominguez sent a Brittany Minton offering racing over the left field fence just out of the reach of the left fielder scoring the pinch runner Kasey Postupack (Fr., Seminole, Fla.) making the score 2-0 in favor of the Lions. Pitching and defense made sure those runs stood up.
The Lions scored again in the third inning, as Casis sent a two-out single into leftfield scoring Slate from second base to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Lions’ bats caught fire in the fifth inning scoring three times in the inning. Both Slate and Agen singled to start the fifth giving Urbanik the chance to came up clutch once again. She delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to leftfield, knocking the Mocs starter out of the game while picking up her 13th RBI in the past six games. Maddox continued the scoring for the Lions driving home the Lions sixth run of the game.
The Lions played outstanding defense while the Mocs left 9 runners on base with seven I scoring position. Urbanik is currently riding a 12 game hitting streak while batting .324 on the season. The win is also Urbanik’s ninth shutout of the year. The Lions have now won 13 of their last 15 games.
The Lions leave SSC play for a non-conference match-up with the No. 11 Valdosta State Blazers Wednesday, April 2 at University Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 5:00 p.m.
