Livingston, Ala. (March 10, 2008) – The Saint Leo softball team (12-5) split a doubleheader against the University of West Alabama (13-10) Monday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex. The Lions opened the day with a dramatic 7-6 win in the first game, but the Tigers returned the favor in the second game scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 6-5 victory.

In game one, Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) provided the heroics for the Lions, not only pitching a complete game victory, but also driving in the game-winning run in the final inning with a two-out single to left field. April Slate (Sr., Land O'Lakes, Fla.) started off the inning by dropping a bloop double into short left field. She would move to third on a groundout by Elysha Agen (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.). After Heather Stroud (Sr., San Antonio, Fla.) lined out for the second out, Urbanik drilled her single into left field to put Saint Leo ahead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Urbanik would close the game out by retiring the side in order.

Agen opened the game with a solo home run to centerfield.  The Lions added a second run on an RBI single by Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) Tatiana Casis (Jr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.). would walk with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to bring home the Lions second run. The Lions would extend their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth.

After the host team put a five spot on the board in the fourth inning to take a three run lead, the Lions answered with three runs in the top half of the fifth on a throwing error, a bases loaded walk to Agen, and on a passed ball.

Urbanik came up with the big pitch when she needed it throughout in recording her eighth victory of the year (8-3). Slate finished the first game with three hits while Stephanie Discepolo (Jr., Spring Hill, Fla.), Stroud and Casis finished with two hits apiece.

In the second game, the Lions rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third to tie the score in the third on a throwing error, and two RBI groundouts by Urbanik and Casis. The Tigers came back to go ahead by one in the home half of the inning. Once again, Saint Leo battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth. Monique Dominguez (Sr., LaPuente, Calif.) came off the bench to stroke a two-run, two-out single up the middle.

Saint Leo was within one out of victory, when West Alabama strung together three infield hits to score two runs and win the game. Kiki VonHolt (Sr., New Port Richey, Fla.) went the distance for the Lions and suffered her second loss (4-2). Agen was the lone Lion to collect two hits in the second game.
