Saint Leo, Fla. (February 11, 2008) – Saint Leo University softball players Amanda Patrick (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) and Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) swept the Sunshine State Conference softball Player of the Week awards, it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil. The pair helped the Saint Leo softball team (2-0) to a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday.
Patrick was impressive in her collegiate debut, batting .714 while posting a 1.286 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage. In a 3-0 game one victory, she went 2-for-3 with a run scored. In a 7-6 win in the nightcap, she was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI and one run. Patrick was also successful in two stolen base attempts in the doubleheader.
Urbanik picked up two wins over Arkansas-Monticello, allowing no earned runs on four hits and one walk over 11.0 innings. She struck out a total of 20 batters. In the opening game of the twin bill, Urbanik hurled a complete shutout, surrendering just two hits and walking one while tying a career high with 13 strikeouts. Appearing in 4.0 innings in the nightcap, she allowed two hits and fanned seven.
Saint Leo student-athletes have now claimed a total of 16 SSC Player of the Week honors in the 2007-08 season. Patrick and Urbanik are the first representatives from the spring sports teams to earn the weekly accolades.
The Saint Leo softball team returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Valdosta State University in a doubleheader at University Field. Game one opening pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
