Lakeland, Fla. (April 6, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (27-16, 9-6 SSC) fell 7-2 to No. 14 Florida Southern College (36-10, 9-3 SSC) in the final game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series at Barnett Field in Lakeland, Fla.
A second inning grand slam by FSC’s Ashley Alipzar provided all the offense the Mocs would need to wrap up the series win by taking two out of three from the Lions.
After the first two Southern batters were retired in the second inning, Leah English, Michelle Tatlock and Nikki Henderson all singled to load the bases. Alpizar then delivered her grand slam over the left field fence to give the home side a 4-0 lead.
The Moccasins added a run in the third and two more in the fourth, while Saint Leo answered with a run in the fifth. The Lions left the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, and could only add a run in the seventh to provide the final margin.
Southern starting pitcher Megan Brown was credited with her second win of the series, and improved to 22-5 overall with a complete-game victory. Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) was the losing pitcher for the Lions, as she fell to 9-8 on the season.
Saint Leo will host Florida Gulf Coast University in a non-conference doubleheader at University Field on Wednesday. Game one will begin at 5:00 p.m.
