Saint Leo, Fla. (March 28, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (23-14) was swept by visiting No. 5 Valdosta State University (27-3) in a non-conference doubleheader at University Field on Wednesday night.  The Lions were edged 1-0 in game one before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.

Both starting pitchers went the distance in the first game, as each struck out 11 batters.  SLU starter Ashley Urbanik’s (So., Riverview, Fla.) 11 K’s matched a career-high, as she fell to 15-7 on the season.  Urbanik allowed just one unearned run on three hits in the game.

Valdosta State starter Kristen Lindsey improved to 11-1 with her eighth complete game and fourth shutout of 2007.  Only Christina Van Tassel (Sr., Valparaiso, Fla.) and Urbanik were able to register hits against Lindsey in the two-hitter.

The only run of the game was scored in the fifth inning, as a fielding error at first base by Saint Leo 2B Valerie Kessel (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) allowed Blazer RF Shannon Cleland to score from first base with what proved to be the game-winning run.

In the second game, Valdosta State scored the opening run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by 1B Robin Williams.  A pair of home runs wrapped up the scoring and the doubleheader sweep, as Kristina Ely connected on a solo shot in the fifth before Alex Acosta delivered a two-run homer in the sixth.

SLU starter Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) was saddled with the loss (8-7) in game two, while Blazers’ starter Brianna Collis tossed a four-hit shutout to secure the win.  Collis struck out 10 to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Saint Leo will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend with a trip to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Lynn University in a three-game series.  The first game between the two will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. with Saturday’s doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  All games will be played on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
