Saint Leo, Fla. (March 19, 2007) – Sophomore DP/1B Ally Maddox (Brandon, Fla.) went a combined 3-for-6 and drove in four runs, as the Saint Leo University softball team (19-11) stretched its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Augustana College on Monday evening.
The Lions won game one 6-3 before battling to a 3-2 win over the Vikings in game two.
Saint Leo pitcher Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) picked up the win in game one (12-6), as she tossed a complete-game and allowed three runs (two earned) on just two hits. She then came on in the seventh inning of game two to secure the win and pick up her first save of the season. Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) was the game two winner, improving to 7-5.
The Lions fell behind in the opening contest, as the Vikings plated a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. However, Saint Leo erupted for five runs in the fourth beginning with a two-run single from Maddox. Urbanik then helped her own cause with an RBI double before the scoring was wrapped up on an RBI single by Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) and a defensive error by the Vikings.
Augustana closed the gap to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth, but Saint Leo added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and ended any hopes of a Viking rally with a perfect seventh inning.
In game two, SLU jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning highlighted by an RBI triple from Maddox. The Lions made it a 3-0 lead in the fifth with an RBI single by Maddox. Augustana rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth, but Urbanik closed the door on the Vikings in the ninth to earn her first save of the year.
Saint Leo will host No. 12 Caldwell College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in another non-conference doubleheader.
