Cheserek, Saint Leo dominate National Preview 8K XC meet

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo freshman Ronald Cheserek had command of the Saint Leo Division II National Preview cross country meet from start to finish, winning the 8K race and leading the Lions to a dominating team victory on Saturday morning at The Abbey Golf Course.

Cheserek completed the 8K course in 26:14.30, finishing 26 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Trey Simons of Morehouse College. Simons clocked a time of 26:40.71.

All five scoring Saint Leo runners finished among the top 16 in points. Senior Rafal Matuszczak was third with a time of 26:57.98, and was the only Lion runner to join Cheserek among the top 10. Junior Anthony Deleva was 11th with a time of 27:39.33, with senior Niclas Bez right behind in 12th place after finishing in 27:42.85; the two runners were 10th and 11th respectively in points. Junior Joe Fuller was the Lions' fifth scorer in 17th place, 16th in points, with a time of 28:13.64.

Freshman Allen Keister (23rd overall/22nd in points, 28:56.83) and freshman Ilio Sanchez (27th overall/26th in points/29:39.11) were pushers in the individual results for Saint Leo.

Other finishers for Saint Leo were Adam Urbaniak (32nd/30:06.62), Eric Hermes (43rd/30:55.47), Tyler Pantley (47th/31:26.43), David Gardner (54th/33:07.22), and Seamus Chalmers (56th/34:06.14).

Saint Leo posted 41 points in the team standings to win the meet, ahead of second-place Flagler College with 62 points. Augusta University (78 pts.) was third, followed by Wilmington University of Delaware (93 pts.) and Morehouse College (107 pts.)

Saint Leo men's cross country is idle next weekend to rest and prepare for the Sunshine State Conference Cross Country Championships, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Melbourne, Fla.
