Cheserek named USTFCCCA D2 National Athlete of the Week

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo freshman Ronald Cheserek was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Men's National Athlete of the Week on Monday, becoming the first Saint Leo cross country athlete to earn the award.

Cheserek, named Sunshine State Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week earlier in the day, received the award for a jaw-dropping performance on Saturday at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invitational. The freshman from Kitale, Kenya, posted a time of 24:43.02 in the 8K race on UF's Mark Bostick Golf Course, crossing the line first out of 298 runners in the vent.

Cheserek's time was approximately 19 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, former UF standout and former SEC outdoor 10,000m champion Eddie Garcia.

His time was also less than a half-second off Niclas Bez's Saint Leo 8K record time of 24:42.40.

"We're very blessed to have Ronald be a part of our program, and for him to earn national runner of the week is a fantastic accomplishment," said Kent Reiber, Saint Leo's head men's and women's cross country coach. "It's hard to imagine that this is our first national athlete of the week with all the other successes we have had, but I'm proud that it was Ronald as he is earning everything he is working for."

With Cheserek leading the way, Saint Leo won the non-Division I team championship at the Mountain Dew Invitational, finishing first out of 12 teams in the event.

The Lions' season continues this Saturday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to race in the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.
