Dunne Claims SSC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year Honors

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore Carl Dunne earned the nod as the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Runner of the Year, league officials announced Tuesday.  Joining Dunne on the 2013 Sunshine State Conference All-Cross Country Team were teammates Valentin Lenz and Rafal Matuszczak, as the Lions claimed three of the seven spots on this year's squad.

Dunne adds the coveted Runner of the Year title to his already lengthy list of accolades.  The 2012 Freshman of the Year used his sophomore campaign to up his game, winning the 2013 SSC men's cross country individual title with a time of 25:37 in the 8K race. The Monasterboice, Ireland native recorded five top-10 finishes throughout his 2013 regular season, and he earned a first-place finish at the FLrunners.com Invitational in Titusville, Fla. on Sept. 27.  Dunne was then named the SSC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week presented by VALIC on Sept. 30.

Lenz earns his first All-Conference honor after a solid sophomore season with the Lions.  The Duesseldorf, Germany native claimed second place individual honors at the 2013 SSC Cross Country Championship race with a time of 25:45, helping the Lions earn a program best second place team finish.  Lenz earned a sixth place finish at the FLRunners.com Invitational, earning a 5K time of 16:27.20 to help the Lions to a first place team finish.

Matuszczak proved to be a force to be reckoned with in his freshman season.  In the Lions' first meet of 2013, the Wschowa, Poland native finished the 5k even in 14:51.44, finishing fourth out of a field of 122.  Matuszczak picked up another fourth place finish at the UF Mt. Dew Invitational, finishing the 8k with a total time of 25:20.31, and crossed third at the FLRunners.com Invitational with a 5K time of 16:00.20. He finished 11th at the SSC Championship race, crossing the line in 26:22.

Seven student-athletes in total earned 2013 All-SSC honors.  Florida Southern's Bobby Ormsby was named Freshman of the Year, and head coach of the Mocs, Ben Martucci, was selected as Coach of the Year.

Joining Dunne, Lenz, Matuszczak and Ormsby on the all-conference team were David Tomchinsky (Florida Southern), Long Tran (Nova Southeastern) and Chris Yanichko (Florida Southern).

In his debut season at Florida Southern, Ormbry recorded five top-10 finishes, including three top-5 finishes. At the SSC Championship, the Fort Myers. Fla. native finished fifth place in a time of 26:11. Ormbsy finished one position behind Dunne at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 14. He recorded his top 8K time of 25:14 at the Florida State Invitational on Oct. 11.

In his first season as head coach at Florida Southern, Martucci led the Moccasins to their conference-leading 16th SSC Men's Cross Country Championship. The two-time SSC individual men's cross country champion and SSC Runner of the Year (2009, 2010) saw his team win three events and finish second twice during 2013. The Moccasins open the season winning the USF Invitational and then closed out the regular season with a team victory at the Florida State Invitational. Four Florida Southern runners earned All-Championship honors by placing in the top-10 at the conference championships. Yanichko came in third, Tomchinsky came in fourth, Ormsby was fifth and Jose Perez was eighth.

Voting for the All-SSC Men's Cross Country Team was conducted among the league cross country coaches.
