TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's cross country team wrapped up their Friday evening with a 14th-place overall finish at Apalachee Regional Park during the Florida State University Invitational.
The Lions first crossed the finish line when freshman Carl Dunne placed 28th with an impressive time of 26:47.1, a finish that ranks sixth on the Saint Leo University All-Time 8K Records list and marks Dunne's fifth consecutive top-30 finish.
Crossing the tape shortly after Dunne with a time of 28:11.1, senior Eric Dirth beat his personal best time of 28:16.16 as he placed 77th in the group.
Another top runner for the Lions was freshman Valentin Lenz who made his debut as a Saint Leo cross country runner, finishing 82nd in the race with a time of 28:17.8.
Crossing the tape within seconds of each other, runners Brian Haynes, Steven Brown, Spencer Mathis, Jeff Van Natter, David Hill, Kevin Papac, Matthew Basin, and Michael Walker wrapped up the Lions' effort as they finished ahead regional rival, Valdosta State University.
Despite the strong Saint Leo finish, the host team of Florida State University took home the team championship title as they finished the invitational with a total of 64 points. The Embry Riddle Eagles featured the top runner however, when senior Evans Kirwa crossed the finish line with a time of 24:40.0.
The Lions will return to the course on Friday, October 12, when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the UCF Invitational. The race is scheduled to begin at 5:40 p.m.
