Nurmio clinches on Senior Day as #2 Men's Tennis downs #8 Lynn, 5-4

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 3 Saint Leo men's tennis team took down No. 8 Lynn, 5-4, in grand style on Friday afternoon as the Lions' lone senior Oskar Nurmio clinched the win for the Green and Gold on Senior Day.

Saint Leo set themselves up for success as they opened with a clutch 2-1 lead following doubles.

Jaime Bueno and Willem Van Den Akker claimed the first point with an 8-5 win at No. 3's, however just a few minutes later, Lynn's Kay Bartmann and Jose Porfirio gave the Fighting Knights their first point with a 9-7 win over Oskar Nurmio and Francisco Aparicio at No. 2 doubles.

The Lions gained their second points with a hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles over Mehdi Laalej and Florida Clemares.

In singles, Lynn earned the first two points as they took flight No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, and flight No. 4, 6-3, 6-4.

Thomas Grinberg, the No. 14 singles player in DII, would even the match back up at 3-3, as he upset Laalej, the No. 6 Singles player, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 1 flight.

Jaime Bueno would add another upset win for the Lions. Bueno, the No. 33 singles player in the nation, took down Kay Bartmann, No. 16, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, in a comeback effort, giving the Lions a 4-3 match lead. Bueno finished the regular season 11-0 at No. 3 singles. 

Lynn would even the match up at 4-4 with a Jose Porfirio 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

The match came down to the result at No. 6 singles between senior Oskar Nurmio and Lynn's Florida Clemares.

Nurmio, the Lions' lone senior, showed out on Senior Day. He opened up with a commanding 6-2 win in the first set and climbed out to a 4-1 lead in the second before Clemares would force an even 5-5 score. Nurmio responded and won the final two points to clinch the match for the Lions with a 7-5 second set score.

Saint Leo finished the regular season at 11-3, 6-1 in the SSC. The Lions will be the No. 2 seed in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on April 20-22 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
