Men’s tennis picked to finish third in SSC preseason poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team was picked third in the 2017 Sunshine State Conference men's tennis preseason poll, as voted by the league coaches, that was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

"I think the guys will be largely motivated with this ranking," head coach Chad Berryhill stated. "You don't often see a team ranked No. 2 in the country in one poll while being No. 3 in their conference poll, so I think that will be a great motivator for our guys. At the same time, the league coaches know we have a lot of inexperience regarding players returning, but those new players have a lot of court experience, and we have guys who sat out last season who now are ready to go."

The Lions trail Barry, who was picked No. 1, and Lynn, who was picked No. 2. Barry earned four first place votes, while Saint Leo earned two, and Lynn earned one.

Saint Leo is currently No. 2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Preseason poll, while Barry is No. 7, and Lynn falls in at No. 8 in the nation.

Last year, the Lions (27-2, 6-0) finished first in the SSC regular season and made school history by winning their first conference tournament championship. The Lions won the NCAA South Regional after claiming the top seed. Following regionals, Saint Leo cruised past Cameron, Northwestern Missouri State, and Armstrong State before falling short to Hawaii Pacific in the NCAA Championship Final.

Saint Leo opens 2017 with a home match against No. 4 Lander on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 10:00 a.m.
