Tennis wraps up play at the Varner Invite

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo tennis teams wrapped up play at the Varner Invitational on Sunday, and earned one flight champion as Alberto Barroso-Campos took home the men’s Flight A title.

Tournament Highlights

Men's             

  • Barroso-Campos took home the Flight A title defeating Ronato Lombardi of Barry University, 6-0, 6-4. He went 3-0, with wins over Nico Dreer of Barry, 6-1, 6-1, and Fernando Rivas, 6-3, 6-3.
  • James Defusto finished in third place in Flight C with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, win over Jose Porifirio from Lynn University. He opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Adrian DeFelice from Rollins. He then fell to Adjin Tahrovic of Barry to put him in the third place bracket.

Women's

  • Coralie Pesenti finished the highest for the Lions with a second place nod in Flight B. She opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fabiana Vitanza from Rollins, and followed it with a hard-fought win over Carli Davis of Rollins, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. She fell in the championship match to Martina Gledacheva of Lynn, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Madeline Gauthier finished in fourth place of Flight C after opening with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Emma Wookey of Rollins. She then fell to Carolina Cuevas from Lynn, 6-2, 6-1. In the third place match, Gauthier fell 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in a hard-fought match.

Up Next
Saint Leo will be sending freshman Barroso-Campos and Natalia Siedliska to the ITA National Small College Championships in Sumter, S.C. from October 15-18. Both will be placed in the Division II bracket for men’s and women’s and will look to take on seven other opponents from the other regions in the nation. The winner of the Division II bracket will be placed in a mini-bracket with the winners of the Division III bracket, the NAIA bracket, and the junior college bracket. The winner of the mini-bracket will earn an at-large bid to the Division I ITA tournament.
