Barroso-Campos, Frusci honored by ITA

TEMPE, ARIZ. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced their Division II Regional and National award winners on Thursday afternoon, and the Saint Leo men's tennis program saw Alberto Barroso-Campos and Head Coach Chris Frusci honored.

The freshman standout was named South Region Rookie of the Year after compiling a 21-3 record so far in singles play, all at flight No.1, and earning the No. 4 singles ranking according to ITA. He currently has 15 wins over nationally ranked singles opponents. He also has a 25-2 record in doubles with partner Alex Theiler. The duo is currently the No.1 doubles pair in the nation.  In the fall, Barroso-Campo won the Men's South Region Championship and finished in third at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships. Barroso-Campos was also named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the year.

Chris Frusci tacked on a National Men's Coach of the Year honor as well as the South Region Men's Coach of the Year award. Frusci has guided the Lions to a 25-1 record so far, and five program firsts: the No. 1 ranking in the South Region, the No. 1 ranking in the nation, a Sunshine State Conference regular season title, a SSC Tournament Title, the Lions first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships, and a current spot in the NCAA Semifinals. Frusci was also the first Saint Leo coach to earn SSC Coach of the Year.

The Lions are still alive in the NCAA tournament at they take on No. 2 Armstrong State on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in the semifinals in Denver, Colo.
