#7 Saint Leo upsets #3 Armstrong State in Top-10 battle

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The No. 7 Saint Leo men's tennis team upset No. 3 Armstrong State in dominating fashion on Saturday, as the Lions took the match, 7-2.

The Lions went up 2-1 after doubles action, and a win from senior Egor Panyushkin sealed the game.

The pairing of Alberto Barroso-Campos and Alex Theiler took down ASU's Pablo Gor and Ignacio Hernandez to set the tone, taking the No. 1 doubles 8-2.

The Pirates evened the match a 1-1 with a 9-7 take down in the No. 3 doubles before Jaime Bueno and Oskar Nurmio topped Luca Cerin and Otakar Lucak, 9-7, to give the Lions the lead heading into singles play.

The Lions won the No. 3, 4, and 2 singles matches in that order to seal the victory for the Lions. Theiler took down Hernandez in the No. 3 slot, 6-4, 6-1, while Bueno topped Cerin, 7-6 (1), 6-3, giving the Lions a 4-1 advantage. It was Panyushkin who sealed the game for the Lions, taking the No. 2 slot in come-back fashion. After falling 4-6, Panyushkin responded winning 6-3, 6-4 to take the game.

Saint Leo dropped the No. 5 match-up before responding with wins in the No. 1 and 6 slots. Barroso-Campos and Gor dueled it out, but Barroso-Campos remained perfect on the season, taking the match-up 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4), in the No. 1 position. Guillaume Vanelven took down Jan Porteset, 8-4, in a quick pairing.

The Lions turn-around quick as they head to Eckerd on Sunday for an 11 AM match.
