No. 7 Saint Leo takes down No. 9 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team comes out of the opening weekend of action with a 2-0 record after taking down No. 9 Valdosta State, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.

The No. 7 Lions opened up with a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

For the second-straight day, Freshman Alberto Barroso-Campos and senior Alex Theiler won the No. 1 doubles match, taking down Gerean Heitmann and Nikolas Herbring, 8-5.

The Lions also earned a doubles points from the pairing of Egor Panyushking and Guillaume Vanelven, as they topped Jo Schemm and Fernado Rivas, 8-3.

Vanelven dominated his singles match, topping Andrew Hervin, 6-2, 6-0, finishing first to give the Lions a 3-1 lead.

In the No. 1 slot, Barroso-Campos topped Heitmann, 6-1, 6-3 for the 4-2 advantage, as VSU took the No.4 slot.  The Lions sealed the day with a win in the No. 5 slot as Elliott Cornello topped Schemm, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Valdosta State took the No. 2 spot before Panyushkin took down Xavier Pineda, 7-5, 7-5, to give the Lions the final score, 6-3.

Saint Leo returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 9 A.M. as they host Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and then at 12 P.M. that same day they will hose ASA Miami.
