#7 Saint Leo takes down #12 Georgia College, 5-4

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The nationally-ranked No. 7 Saint Leo men's tennis team took down a tough No. 12 Georgia College team, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon to open the season 1-0.

The Lions started the day down 1-2 after doubles action. Freshman Alberto Barroso-Campos and senior Alex Theiler teamed up as the No. 1 doubles to top Yannick Hass and Vince Castermans, 8-2. In the No. 2 and 3 slot, the Lions were taken down, 8-4, 8-6, respectively.

In singles actions, Saint Leo made their comeback.

Egor Panyushkin, who is nationally ranked at No. 19 for singles, finished first, taking down No. 47 Jannick Kumbier in the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-2, giving the Lions the tying points, 2-2.

Nationally ranked No. 13 Theiler followed with a win over Chris Graff, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles slot. Saint Leo jumped to a 3-2 lead.

Barroso-Campos, who is currently the No. 3 singles individual in the nation, faced Yannick Hass, who is ranked No.14, in the No. 1 singles spot. Barroso-Campos jumped out to a 6-2 win in the first set, but faltered 4-6 in the second. In the deciding set, the freshman took it to Hass, taking the set, 6-0.

With the 4-2 lead, Saint Leo saw Jaime Bueno take down Castermans, 6-3, 6-4, to help the Lions seal the game. Saint Leo went up 5-2, claiming the match before Georgia College took the No. 4 and No. 6 match-ups, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, and 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, respectively.

Saint Leo faces No. 9 Valdosta State on Sunday at 12 PM.
