Wins over DI opponents highlight first day for Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. - The Saint Leo men's tennis team wrapped up day one at the 48th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The Basics
When:
 Sept. 11-14
Where: Dan Magill Tennis Complex, Athens, Ga.

Day One Highlights

  • In the opening day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Egor Panyushkin (Sr., Moscow, Russia) defeated Guille Nicolas of Tennessee Tech in his opening round game of the Division II, and followed it up with a win over Lucas Sanchez of Mississippi State.
  • Newcomer Alberto Barroso-Campos (Fr., Montijo, Spain) was placed in the "Division I" bracket of the tournament, and went 2-0 with wins over Artem Khrapko of Davidson, and Jannis Koeke from Georgia State. On Saturday, he will face the no. 1 seed of the tournament Wayne Montgomery of Georgia.

Quotes from Coach

"I was rather pleased with our first day of the tournament, considering we've really only had two weeks of training and our guys had to play multiple matches in the heat today. Not many guys are in their best form this early in the fall, but I have to say that our guys are playing pretty close to their potential right now. For Alberto to advance to the 3rd round in his first collegiate tournament and Egor to be playing some of the best tennis I've seen from him, it brings a lot of excitement for tomorrow. Fons and Alex had some bad luck with the no-ad scoring format but I was pleased with their performance as well. We just hope to continue to get better each day."

Day Two Draws

  • Panyushkin will face Jason Kros of Virginia Tech.
  • Barroso-Campus will play No.1 Jannis Koeke of UGA.
  • Alex Theiler (Sr., Santiago, Chile) will play Trevor Foshey of MSU in the "Division I" consolation bracket.
  • Fons Verberne (Sr., Helmond, Holland) will play Austin Robles of Arkansas in the "Division III" consolation bracket.
