Parkes named ITA South Region Assistant Coach of the Year

SKILLMAN, N.J. – Saint Leo University men's tennis assistant coach Martin Parkes was named the Assistant Coach of the Year for the South Region as announced by the ITA office.

Parkes was a member of the coaching staff that led the Lions to its first ever NCAA Division II South Region final after earning a No. 4 seed in the tournament.  The Green and Gold boasted a 16-6 overall record and enjoyed a banner year as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation.

"We are very happy to have brought a regional award to the Saint Leo Community. Martin has been a huge component of our success not only for this year but over the past few years. He has helped our student-athletes grow as tennis players and individuals," said head men's tennis coach Chris Frusci. "I am grateful to have him represent our program and make such an impact as he does continuously. To be able to be voted on by your peers surely proves how deserving he was of this award."

Saint Leo earned the program's first-ever win over then-No. 7 Lynn University on Feb. 15 and have won 12 matches against ranked foes including an upset win over No. 4 Concordia (N.Y.).  Saint Leo finished second in the Sunshine State Conference regular season and earned a No. 2 seed in the SSC Championship tournament.
