Men's tennis falls to Barry in South Region Final

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After advancing to the second round of postseason-play for the first time in program history, the No. 5 Saint Leo men's tennis squad was dealt a 5-1 defeat at the hands of No. 2 Barry University on Sunday morning at the Buccaneers Tennis Center.

The Lions conclude their season with a 16-6 overall record while the hosting Buccaneers improve to a pristine 22-0 on the season heading into the Round of 16 in Arizona.

The Bucs dominated the doubles round, sweeping the Lions 3-0 to begin singles action.  Barry's No. 2 tandem of Ahmed Triki and Fabian Groetsch bested the No. 7 Saint Leo duo of Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti by an 8-5 score.

The third court finished next as Renato Lombardi and Franco Echenique defeated Netanel Alcabas and Fons Verberne by an 8-3 score before Barry concluded the sweep with an 8-3 win on the second court.

Saint Leo took the first singles showdown as No. 26 Egor Panyushkin ousted Barry's Nico Dreer in consecutive sets, winning by 6-1 and 7-5 scores.

Bucaneers' athlete No. 4 Fabian Groetsch bested Alcabas to give Barry a 4-1 lead before Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio fell to Echenique by 6-1 and 6-0 scores to advance the Bucs to the NCAA Division II Championship in Surprise, Ariz.

The Saint Leo men's squad returns home after having one of the most successful seasons in program history and the first for head coach Chris Frusci.  Frusci led the Lions to a 16-6 record and advanced the team past the first round of the regional for the first time in Saint Leo history.
